What is the name of the galaxy that our solar system is in?

The name of our galaxy is the Milky Way. Our solar system is located in the outer reaches of the Milky Way Galaxy. All of the stars that you see at night and our Sun belong to the Milky Way.


The solar system consists of:

  • one central star, the Sun
  • eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune
  • more than 60 moons
  • millions of rocky asteroids billions of icy comets

What is an orbit?
An orbit is the path that a planet moves through.
All the planets orbit the Sun in elliptical paths.
(An ellipse is just a stretched out circle.)
